@Bread&Circuses Thanks B&C. I know all about that feature. However, A88 often provides insight and information I find interesting and wouldn't want to miss any. It's just the omnipresent zingers. They often distract and become the focus of the post. Unnecessary.
@dramucom I've only blocked a handful, and most of those have since been banned for life. Can't say how many have blocked me.
@Bread&Circuses I've blocked no one and doubt I ever would. As far as being blocked.... well, I do tend to get preachy so you never know.
@dramucom You've probably never met Gemini. I blocked who ever it was that cloned Frac's ID, turned out that was Box. A88 deliberately compelled me to block him. The few I've blocked I've never regretted. Those who blocked me I figure are doing me a favor.
@Bread&Circuses No, I don't know about all that stuff and as I wasn't active here at the time I don't and likely won't have an opinion about it. I'm glad you and others find the block feature useful. It's just a shame things had to get that bad.
@dramucom To be honest, at the time, the normal and ordinary exchanges in here between perceived arch enemies, were limited to a looooooooot of swearing. The block feature was a golden solution to that as there was no moderation, save for truly explicit and abhorrent interactions. Nowadays its kinda pointless.
@JudgeDredd I totally agree that it is pointless. Personally, I stay logged off when I visit here unless I have a post or comment to make so me blocking or being blocked by someone wouldn't make much difference.
@dramucom Yeah....that was the Achilles heel of the blocking function too. Once you logged out, you could see the comments made by people you blocked or had blocked you. And everybody did just that. They would log out to see and log back in to reply.
It was truly annoying seeing member avatars blink in and out of the Users Online list on a constant basis
@JudgeDredd I thought only the saddest and most pathetic did that. I never have, would. That's the whole point of blocking.
@JudgeDredd The only time I have to log on is if Doc boots the system, or so I've thought. I'm always logged on otherwise. I've called out a couple I suspected that may, I can only imagine in could have struck a cord.

@JudgeDredd I can imagine. I'm thankful I didn't have to deal with that during my short stint as a mod. I did have my hands full knocking out profane screen names and avatars though.

@Omenomen He had changed a number of names to throw everybody off. I am not sure what his first one was. But I remember the Doc being distinctly fed up with him and permanently banning him after spamming the site with articles sympathetic to radical Islam.

@Bread&Circuses Oh yes I had some unpleasant conversations with them a few yrs ago . We did talk quite a bit at 1st but then it turned ugly so i stopped replying but they sure tried to trigger me.
@manditoe I agree about having a good sense of humour. However the name calling appears to be more than just trying to trigger someone. It is done as if to say, “If you don’t think like I do I will call you names.” This kind of name-calling is verbal abuse and a way to control others. It appears that he cares very little about others and mostly wants things to go his way even if it means hurting people. That is not healthy.
People who resort to name calling should be discouraged from doing so and a way to do that is by expressing public disapproval.
@dramucom I agree but there is a difference. Derogatory name calling is against the ToS when directed against a Member. When it is directed to public persons or people in general, there is not much we can do. If we did, everybody would be suspended in no time.
@dramucom Even then it depends. You have to take into account the severity and vulgarity in the insult and the frequency its used in everyday speech. "Idiot", "Asshat", "Moron" wouldn't even qualify as insults in here. "Retard", "Asshole", "Fuckwad" however would.
@JudgeDredd I see what you mean and I'm not advocating a change in the ToS or in moderation to blanket ban all insulting words. Insulting words can sometimes actually be used to show affection for someone like a family member or close friend. They can also be used to call attention to oneself as in a way of saying "Hey talk to me ". As in anything context matters.
However, I choose to believe that using insults in any context has consequences. Making someone feel hurt or uncomfortable. You and I recently had a short discussion on another thread where I described to you how a friend of mine used the n-word towards me in a friendly way ( as in 'You're my n-word') and how uncomfortable it made me. I sometimes engage people who use insults and threats in their comments to try to discuss with them their use of harmful words and hopefully find a better way to express the frustration they have with someone they don't agree with. ...
